I’ve recently had the pleasure of getting to know Jean Ryan, a gifted writer and generous spirit whose story, Manatee Gardens, opens the collection Outer Voices Inner Lives. Jean has since kept up a correspondence with me and had several of her blog posts featured here at lgbtSr. Her collection, Survival Skills (Ashland Creek Press) is available for anyone interested in superb writing and stories with deep insight into the human experience. I couldn’t think of anyone better for a 6 Questions feature. – Mark/Editor

MM: It’s been really good to get to know you more since we “met” through the Outer Voices Inner Lives collection. Can you tell readers a little about Jean Ryan? Native Vermonter, now in Napa, CA …

One Thing or Another: Still Life with Benefits

It’s always One Thing or Another … a lighthearted look at aging, life, and the absurdities of it all.

    By Mark McNease

I read once that the most revolutionary thing we can do is slow down … And now, in the woods, with darkness and animals just on the other side of the wall, I am doing that: slowing down. It is revolutionary. It changes and transforms.

It’s that time of year when custom encourages us to take a look back over the past twelve months and contemplate what we’ve been through.  It’s always a lot. Have you ever reached the end of a year when there weren’t events of great significance? January begins with hope and December ends with surrender—that’s the annual passage we take again and again until the journey ends. Some of us lose loved ones, some of us change jobs, some of us find joy above and beyond simply waking up each morning slightly amazed we’re still here. I don’t know about you, but that’s really how I feel most days when I find myself conscious once more: what in the world is this? How did I come to be, and how am I able to ask that question? It’s as miraculous as anything will ever be.

Lillian Bostwick hated the cat in the window. It taunted her, defied her, and finally taught her how to live again.

“It sat in the fifth floor window all day long, season to season, morning to night, staring across into her living room. It would be there when she got home from work, positioned exactly where it had been when she’d left that morning. It watched her as if it knew everything about her, as if it just couldn’t wait to tell the neighborhood about Lillian Bostwick and all her little secrets.

    The Amazon Trail
    Regrets, I Have a Few

Luncheonette. Darn it all, I just found the word I was looking for back in 2007 when I set a scene in a coffee shop in New York. It wasn’t a coffee shop, it was a luncheonette. In that era, you could use the term coffee shop, but a reader might picture a Greenwich Village or a North Beach San Francisco dive that served espresso to long-haired women and men in berets. In my novel Beggar of Love, I wanted to evoke elbows on the counter, ham sandwiches and steaming cups of joe.

Telling my sweetheart about this, she popped out with, “My Beautiful Luncheonette.” We laughed, because of the 1985 gay male film “My Beautiful Laundrette.” I immediately thought I could write a short story about a luncheonette, but I don’t have enough time left to write a story about every word I fall in love with, not to mention I already wrote Dusty’s Queen of Hearts Diner.

Something New: Reader’s Choice for Book #2 in the Marshall James Series

    The paperbacks arrived!

I’m doing something completely new with the Marshall James series and having readers choose the main storyline for book #2. Ebook readers can now find this at the end of the book.

Below are two scenarios for a central plot. JUST FOLLOW THIS LINK to SurveyMonkey and vote for the story you’d like to see next. I’ll close the voting at the end of December and get to work on the next gripping Marshall James Novel in the new year, featuring the storyline readers most want to see in the second book. I’ll announce it at my website MarkMcNease.com, and do my damnedest to get it to you for your fall reading, 2018.

Without further ado, here are the options:

    (1) BEAUTIFUL CORPSE: A MARSHALL JAMES NOVEL

It’s been a year since the Paisley Parrot murders. Marshall has moved on, now working at the Skylight, a gay bar in West Hollywood as far removed from the Parrot in atmosphere and clientele as it is in location. New, trendy, packed every night, and dangerous, the Skylight is at the epicenter of L.A’s underground drug culture. Marshall will have none of it: he’s newly sober and living with Mac McElroy, the LAPD detective who’d saved his life during the Paisley Parrot/Popper Jack killings.

    Death by Pride

The Pride Trilogy concludes with ‘Death by Pride.’ It’s Gay Pride weekend, the most festive weekend of the year in New York City. Stalking the party is the most successful serial killer the city has ever seen. He claims his victims in threes and has just begun his newest spree. Detective Linda Sikorsky comes to town to visit Kyle Callahan and his husband Danny Durban. It’s her first Pride Parade and may well be her last. Harmless fun turns to terror in a frantic effort to stop the killer once the first body floats to the river’s edge. This time it’s personal, and this time one of them might not make it out alive.
