It’s not surprising that so many people don’t know Jim Thorpe is a place. Named after the legendary Native American athlete, the town changed its name from Mauch Chunk when Thorpe’s widow agreed to have him re-buried here in exchange for the town being named after him.
This is our second trip here. We’d visited a couple years ago during the pandemic, and I wanted to come back when the weather was warm and things were normal – although we’ve learned that the old normal will never really return.
We’re staying at the Inn at Jim Thorpe, a pleasantly old and well-kept hotel in the center of the small town. The Wi-Fi is sketchy at best, and almost nothing opens before 8:00 a.m. (thank goodness for the Turkey Hill mini-mart up the street). It’s a good place for hiking, taking the scenic train tour, and the trolley. Also, there are a number of towns not far from here if you’re in the mood for taking some day trips. Overall, it’s a place we’re glad to have visited, and now we can put it on the “done that” list. Is that a recommendation or not? I’d say if you’re not travelling far, and you want to try out a very quaint small town with Swiss architecture and some gorgeous scenery, it’s a to-do.

Next up: our return to Lancaster, PA, a return-visit favorite.
We’ve stayed at the same hotel for a few years now, and it’s become our home away from home when we visit our friends there. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the staff is friendly, the pool is open late–all great qualities in a hotel. Plus, being so close to downtown Lancaster means there’s plenty of restaurants and attractions within walking distance. Coming later in June …
