Since opening under new ownership just months ago, Sergeantsville Inn has reestablished itself as a dining destination. We hadn’t been there for several years, and we wanted to return after the Inn’s reopening following a fire in 2015 that destroyed the interior. We liked the food before, and this time it was nothing short of spectacular.
Located at the corner of Route 523 and Rosemont Ringoes Road in Sergeantsville, NJ, the Inn has been around for generations. It has one of those original stone facades you find in structures built in the 1800s and earlier. First named for the Sergeant family, the Inn has been a private residence, a feed store, and a local fixture in the community since its founding.
Most recently it was purchased by Daniel Brunina and Jes Taylor, who first met each other while working at Roots Steakhouse with Harvest Restaurant Group in Morristown, New Jersey. The Inn gave them an opportunity to offer their shared vision, and this top-notch restaurant is the result. To say they’ve succeeded is an understatement.
The Inn boasts both a tavern and a dining room. We were seated with three other couples in a dining area with a fireplace. The service was quick, efficient and impeccable, and it reflected the quality of the food.
I started with their warm winter soup, consisting of a delicious blending of parsnip, celery root, lemon, and rosemary crouton. Frank had their field greens.
For our entrees, I enjoyed their perfectly-cooked scallops, with tricolored cauliflower, coriander vinaigrette, and black currant. The flavors were sensational, and the plating was excellent. Frank had their pecan-crusted local fluke, with squash, brown butter, lemon, and capers. We passed on dessert (new year, new commitments!), but I don’t doubt they’re as phenomenal as the rest of the food.
This is a destination restaurant. We’re lucky to live just 15 minutes away, but even if it takes an hour, it’s worth it. Nothing short of 4 yums, and pretty close to 5.
Restaurant reviews are based on a 5 Yum scale, 5 meaning put it on your must list, 1 meaning eat at your peril.
